I have a fear that no one will read this article. It’s got a morose headline and most of us would rather not think about such things. However it’s also true that we do have fears and worries. Some are founded on past experience and some are unfounded and just head games we play with ourselves maybe because we are bored. Some are built into our DNA.
Mark Twain said, “Don’t tell me worry doesn’t pay. All the things I worry about never happen.” So his comedic reaction to worry was that it’s good to worry thereby ensuring the dreaded thing will never happen. Believe it or not, it’s only 85% true. 85% of the things we worry about never happen. But 15% can turn out to be true.
Then what do we do? Well, there is a strategy for that…
Fear is a natural phenomenon. It’s actually your essence keeping you from doing stupid things. Like jumping off a bridge into a shallow river even if you’ve had 3 or 4 beers.
Fear creates some force of protection around you and your fight or flight response is a handy thing to have tucked away for emergencies. So embrace the fear and hug it, be thankful for it but don’t indulge it very much. Most of the time, those worrisome things won’t happen but if they do… embrace it.
