The Law of Memory

Ms. Pugblisi, 4th grade, drilled it into us. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It’s the law of memory. Yesterday two things happened that made me remember this basic law. 

I am the current past President of our local Toastmaster’s Club at Franklin Square Hospital. (That’s a real title in Toastmasters) Yesterday’s agenda was thin. Only one scheduled speaker with 2 open slots. We have a one hour lunch meeting and usually can get in 3 prepared speeches, Table Topics and Evaluations. We have a good group of people from all walks of life.

The gentleman who was scheduled as Toastmaster was a new member and hadn’t handled this role before. I felt compelled to offer to give one of my previously prepared speeches, sometimes called a ‘pocket’ speech. That one you keep in your pocket for any such occasion.

Of course you know what I spoke about: Health.

I gave my MEDS speech in which MEDS stands for Mind State, Exercise, Diet and Sleep as being the 4 Pillars of Health.

I have been in Toastmasters for 2 years and I use this MEDS formula almost daily in my counseling and coaching. If I couldn’t stand up and talk about this for 7 minutes then either Toastmasters failed or I did.

Thankfully, I gave it my best and got a good evaluation! It was good practice for me. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It’s important to have enough speakers to ensure a content rich meeting since we had new members and one guest in attendance. So that worked out great. 

The second thing about repetiton: My daughter Katrina is taking Chemistry this semester at Community College. She had her index cards with the Element Symbols on one side the name of the element on the other. 

She was studying. I was proud of her for taking this initiative, but I wanted her to empty the dishwasher. “But dad, I am studying.” “You empty the dishwasher while I flash the cards at you and let’s see how well you do,” I said. She did great. 

As you might imagine, I listern to Health programs on the radio. I watch PBS specials with Drs Hyman, Amen, Fuhrman, etc. They have good content. It’s the same content I have heard before. Here are the issues that are generally talked about:

  • Cholesterol
  • Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer

The reason the topics are always the same is because we need to hear it over and over again until such a time that we feel the need to take action. Sad to say, we usually are taking action after a difficult diagnosis or the frown on your doctors face looking at your lab results. These 4 health challenges comprise a huge number of American fatalities. Heart disease is the largest killer, followed closely by cancers. Not all but much of these early deaths are preventable. One doctor estimates that as many as 250,000 heart disease fatalities each year could be avoided by the use of sufficient fish oil! (It’s a radical number!) 

It’s better to build a fence at the top of the cliff than a hospital at the bottom of the mountain. Oh, we need the hospitals for sure. I am glad they are there. But if given half a chance, we can choose not to participate in after the fact health care or in reality, disease managment as opposed to health care and prevention. 

If we hear it often enough, we may be willing to take those small preventative measures of paying attention to mind-state, practicing good posture, good deep breathing, drinking enough water, avoiding processed foods when possible, moving our bodies, and learning how to get good restful sleep to stay healthy and benefit from the reset and body processes that work automagically at night while we rest. 

A few days ago I wrote about cholesterol. There is always more to say than will fit in a single email. Or even a 5 – 7 minute speech. But I did need to remind you that beans and legumes, oatmeal and whole grains (true whole grains) have an beneficial effective on lowering cholesterol without any negative side effects. Why? 

It’s fiber. Cheerios boast about it, but Cheerios are processed foods. I would rather people eat rolled or steel cut oats for breakfast and use beans in place of some meats for lunch or dinner. Beans are slow digesting and do not raise blood sugar very much, at least it will not spike like other processed and refined foods that burn up quickly in the system.

IN case you missed it over the weekend, I am going to repeat the cholesterol lesson I sent out: Repeat, repeat, repeat.  

What’s the goal with cholesterol?

There is a superficial, general knowledge of what cholesterol is all about. “if my cholesterol is too high, I might have a heart attack.”  It seems almost everyone I talk to is on some level of statin medication. Researching this I found that indeed Lipitor is the most prescribed drug in America, outselling all others. Viagra doesn’t even make the top ten list.

The Framington Heart Study framed high cholesterol as a risk factor of heart disease.   Statins reduce cholesterol levels by interfering with your normal liver function. Even though statins have been prescribed by the millions and earn billions for pharmaceutical companies, there is no linkage between reduction in heart attacks from taking statins or reducing cholesterol in this manner. Heart disease remains the highest killer in America despite these efforts.

So my argument is that the wrong question is being asked. Not, “Oh your cholesterol is high, what should I take to reduce it?” But rather. “Oh my cholesterol is high why is my liver producing that much?” Is there some dietary or life style issue that I can change to reduce cholesterol?

Now, in the last three years, doctors who are actually asking the deeper questions are not as concern about amounts of cholesterol in the blood, but the size and density of the cholesterol. If LDL cholesterol is small and dense, there is a greater chance of those lipids sticking, getting hung up or embedding in the artery walls, which leads to plaque build up.

IF the cholesterol is larger and fluffy there is little chance of sticking and plaque build up. Where do you ever hear this? Not in the Lipitor commericials.

Why Omega-3 is so helpful to heart health: Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are two molecules that help the cholesterol to be fluffy and less sticky. Omega-3 is a mild blood thinner that helps the blood to flow better, flow smoothly.

Diet of course has a great deal to do with your internal systems and liver function. Many books have been written on the subject and you can be sure if you eat lots of veggies and your diet is high in natural fiber, cholesterol with be of little concern.

The Framington Heart study pegged a total cholesterol level of 250 as being the danger point. It seems each year your doctor lowers the threshhold and if your LDL is over 100, they want you taking a statin.

It’s hard to know what to aim for when the target keeps moving.

The plan I recommend before getting into specifics of life style, diet and health coaching, before attempting to change life long habits and patterns, is to add Omega-3, Red Yeast Rice and CoQ10 to your regimen to stave off any ideas your doctor has about putting you on a statin. You can call this the easy way, at least to get started.

I’ve already mentioned a bit about what Omega-3s do for you but there is more. If there were ever a panacea of health in capsule form, it’s Omega-3 fish oil. It has to be fresh. It has to be contaminant free. You should buy from a trusted source.
