Omega-3s can fight age-related mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Those two things are different. I just want to be clear. We sometimes associate mental decline with potentially Alzheimer’s, but it’s not necessarily the case.
A decline in brain function is the unavoidable consequences of aging. We just wear out over time. But several studies have linked higher omega-3 intake to decreased age-related mental decline, and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Certainly, we understand that Alzheimer’s, Dementia, has to do with the nerves in the brain, and the sheath, the protective sheath. The DHA and omega-3s are some of those substances that create perfectly good brain cells. It’s suggested that omega-3 supplements may be the most beneficial at the disease onset when the symptoms of AD are very mild. Keep in mind that more research is needed, obviously, on omega-3s and brain health.
