Heart Disease and Beans

heartdiseaseHeart Disease doesn’t get enough press. It’s still the Numero Uno culprit in the death of Americans. Yet most people think cancer kills more people in America than heart disease. Granted it’s a close second. I know we are all worried about ISIS and Iran buying nuclear technology from North Korea. We worry about our fellow citizens, doctors, teachers and social workers who travel to dangerous parts of the world to help the less fortunate. These are legitimate concerns but they are the fodder of the political class. And the loss of close family to terrorists are the stuff of nightmares. This is where media is complicit in overemphasizing one danger and neglecting to mention a much more prominent danger.

Eat Beans

Name any bean you can think of you and you can make a tasty dish, get ample protein and thereby reducing not just heart disease risks but also diabetes. Why? Because less insulin is needed. Sugars of all types but especially fructose and starchy carbohydrates work in the opposite direction to increase the need for insulin and thereby create havoc for the pancreas.

How Many Plane Crashes a Day?

mid_air_plane_crashesPlane crashes are catastrophic. They involve people of all ages, infants to teenagers, grown folks in their prime, seasoned citizens. We are shocked and horrified by these uncommon events. But numbers don’t lie. A Boeing 757 can hold 200 – 295 passengers. If we used a round number like 300 and divided that number by the number of heart disease related deaths, you’d be shocked. Even mortified.

From the CDC:

  • Total Number of deaths in the US: 2,596,993
  • Death rate: 821.5 deaths per 100,000 population
  • Life expectancy: 78.8 years
  • Infant Mortality rate: 5.96 deaths per 1,000 live births

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:

  • Heart disease: 611,105
  • Cancer: 584,881
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 149,205
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 130,557
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,978
  • Alzheimer’s disease: 84,767
  • Diabetes: 75,578
  • Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,979
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 47,112
  • Intentional self-harm (suicide): 41,149

If we divide 611,105 by 365, it’s an incredible number. “Huge” as one political figure likes to say. 1,674 deaths per day from heart disease. 90% of these deaths are preventable by so-called “lifestyle” choices. Now, divide 300 into 1,674 it’s about six Boeing 757s per day, crashing and burning, every day of the year. That would get some headlines.

Cancer is not far behind. Again, many doctors, healers and integrative health specialists believe many of these cases could be prevented.

If a person walked 10 – 30 minutes a day, if they reduced consumption of processed foods and learn to live without emotional bitterness, many of these deaths could be, would be prevented.
