Parents Tips For Better Health For Their Kids

Kids copy every single thing they see

Recently I had the great pleasure of traveling to Myrtle Beach. It had been 13 months since I had seen my grandchildren and there was a new grandchild, a baby boy who was eight months old I had never met, except through a little FaceTime, a little picture here and there. Oh my God, was it great to go down and actually visit with my daughter, her husband, and the three kids.
One thing I noticed just in the way I understand life, what I’ve learned about my own self and in coaching clients is that the imprinting that happens at the beginning of our lives, from zero till seven years old, we are instilled with so many interesting things because what do kids do? They copy every single thing they see. They see it, they act it out. They see it; they suck it up like a sponge.

My daughter, who is a bit of a fitness person, gets up at 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning and she has her hour workout before the kids get up. She has her protein shake. When the girls get up to get ready for school, guess what they’re having for breakfast? Protein shakes, just like mom, and that’s the way it is. If I think back to when I was a child and what I ate and how I got into trouble with my physical health, a lot of it stems from the habits I learned when I was really, really young. The habits that we form are going to stay habits in our lives until we make an adult decision and a conscious decision to give that up for the greater good.

We got to make a decision

When we figure out that we’re eating too much sugar, too much ice cream at night, too many fatty foods that don’t really serve, or we’re eating too many carbohydrates and our blood sugar is biking off the charts, well, we got to make a decision.

• Do we run to the doctor and grab a pill for that ill?

• Are we going to do the lifestyle change?

This is hard work granted. I’m not saying it’s not, but the lifestyle change is more natural and more helpful because those pills the doctor gives you come with a whole long list of side effects.
Remember, parents out there, grandparents out there, you know what I mean. Let’s take good care of our kids, let’s be thankful that we have this beautiful world to bring them into and to teach them really good habits so that when they’re older, they won’t have as many battles as we’ve had in our baby boomer years growing up and trying to figure this stuff out.
