Achieve Optimal HEART Health Fast

garey-foxWe are creatures. Mammals actually. There are certain things we eat and other things we just don’t. I was at dinner at a swank Italian restaurant when the waiter spelled out the specials. They had several but being in Maryland it seems that this restaurant, this particular evening were serving up seafood specials. Sea Bass, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, and on and on it went.

One of our party has a life-long aversion to anything from the sea. No exceptions. I just turned to her and started chuckling knowing that none of this would be appealing to her. She found a great choice for her, veal. Another of our party is nearly vegetarian, a lover of salads of all types and the more the better. She’s aghast that anyone could eat veal knowing how these baby cows are treated or mistreated.

I’m in the middle. I’ll eat just about anything that isn’t too exotic. I can eat some fish but mostly, I’d stick closer to the middle of the road. The one exception for me is Indian Cuisine. I’ll eat any sub-continental dish with great zeal. After all, I lived in India for ten years, so maybe I just have fond remembrances of happy times.

The American diet has been called SAD. Standard American Diet. Canned veggies, highly processed meats. Lots of chemicals for preservation and increased shelf life.

This is why I am in the supplement business. Most Americans don’t or won’t eat healthy enough and by the time we hit 60, we are on various medications. But I protested this way of life and at age 55 decided I would go another direction. Omega-3 fish oils, herbals, vitamins. The way farming is handled we just can’t do the apple a day keeps the doctor away. That apple isn’t really a full fledged apple any more. It’s been engineered and re-engineered and apparently only has 40% of its food value as opposed to even fifty years ago.

 

All of us can take a giant leap toward longevity just by taking supplements. Supplementation not only protects against deficiency but also bridges the gap between average nutrition, which culminates in premature death, and optimum nutrition, which extends life span by decades. At the root of cardiovascular health: During the past 25 years, the cardiovascular effects of marine omega-3 (omega-3) fatty acids have been the subject of increasing investigation. In the late 1970s, epidemiological studies revealed that Greenland Inuits had substantially reduced rates of acute myocardial infarction compared with Western control subjects. These observations generated more than 4,500 studies to explore this and other effects of omega-3 fatty acids on human metabolism and health. From epidemiology to cell culture and animal studies to randomized controlled trials, the cardioprotective effects of omega-3 fatty acids are becoming recognized. These fatty acids, when incorporated into the diet at levels of about 1 g/d, seem to be able to stabilize myocardial membranes electrically, resulting in reduced susceptibility to ventricular dysrhythmias, thereby reducing the risk of sudden death.

The recent GISSI (Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell’Infarto miocardico)-Prevention study of 11,324 patients showed a 45% decrease in risk of sudden cardiac death and a 20% reduction in all-cause mortality in the group taking 850 mg/d of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have potent anti-inflammatory effects and may also be antiatherogenic. Higher doses of omega-3 fatty acids can lower elevated serum triglyceride levels; 3 to 5 g/ d can reduce triglyceride levels by 30% to 50%, minimizing the risk of both coronary heart disease and acute pancreatitis. This review summarizes the emerging evidence of the use of omega-3 fatty acids in the prevention of coronary heart disease.
